2017 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

    Wine & Spirits - April 2020

“Greg Morthole sourced fruit for this 2017 from vineyards in the Santa Rosa plain, the Middle Reach of the Russian River and Green Valley. Some of the fruit also came from an estate vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. Those varied sites provided enough generous fruit flavor to balance the wine’s brighter notes of sassafras and earthy notes of roots. It’s a clean, fragrant and spicy Pinot Noir to pour with grilled pork.” – J.G.

“Thick, tannic and generous in oak, this is a hearty, full-bodied red from a mix of vineyards in the appellation. Bright threads of orange, strawberry and dried herb pepper the core, which leads to a luxuriously opulent finish.” – V.B.

    2018 Virginia's Block Sauvignon Blanc

    Sonoma Magazine - December 2019

“Gentle fresh-herb and fresh grass notes add interest to the succulent kiwi fruit, lime, and tropical flavors. Winemaker Greg Morthole aged approximately 60% of the wine in neutral oak and acacia barrels, which enhanced the mouthfeel without interfering with the wine’s vibrancy.”

    2018 Virginia's Block Sauvignon Blanc

    Wine & Spirits - December 2019

“From a five-acre block of Sauvignon Blanc on loamy soils, this wine is fattened up by a portion of fruit that’s fermented and aged in neutral French oak and acacia barrels. It doesn’t go through malolactic, so it sustains its tangy freshness, with notes of tart apple, white cranberries, Crenshaw melon and some green-peppercorn spiciness. Juicy and clean, it’s ready for melon with prosciutto.” - J.G.

    2016 River West Chardonnay

    Sommelier Challenge - September 2019

The 2016 Chardonnay River West Vineyard opens with notes of lemon, crème fraîche, toast, and yellow tree fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with tropical-tinged fruit and toasty accents, with refreshing acidity on the finish.

  • 93 points - Year's Best Chardonnay

    2016 River West Chardonnay

    Wine & Spirits - October 2019

“Greg Morthole ferments this Chardonnay in French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic conversion, then he ages it for ten months. Still, the cool, spicy freshness of the fruit from this vineyard on Westside Road carries through the wine in notes of lemon blossoms, lemon zest and deeper tones of bay leaf. The wine’s density and savor keep it grounded, even as the bright fruit gives it a lift.”

  • 5 Stars - Exceptional

    2016 River West Chardonnay

    Restaurant Wine - August 2019

“Impressive Davis Bynum Chardonnay: very distinct in character (pineapple, lemon, apple, white peach, lime, spearmint), full bodied, crisp, and very persistent on the finish. Great value. Can be aged a bit. Aged 12 months in French and eastern European oak barrels, 17% new. Clones 4, 15, 76, 809, Wente, Spring Mountain.”

    2014 River West Chardonnay

    Wine Advocate - 2017

The 2014 Chardonnay River West Vineyard has an appealing struck match and savory character over a core of pineapples, guava and apricots, plus a suggestion of toasty oak. Medium-bodied, it has a lovely silkiness to the texture and plenty of tropical fruit and toasty flavors on offer in the mouth with a lively line of acid lending freshness, finishing long.

    2015 River West Chardonnay

    Wine Enthusiast - 2018

From an estate site alongside Westside Road, this impressive white shines in full-bodied nutty oak and a slight element of reduction that adds rather than detracts. Ecotic in salty tangerine, peach and stone, it lingers in lasting oak spice. – Virginie Boone

    2013 Virginia's Block Sauvignon Blanc

    Wine Advocate - December 2014

Beautiful melony, fig and honeyed notes emerge from the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Virginia’s Block, but virtually no oak. This wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfiltered. A top Sauvignon Blanc, it is medium-bodied, fresh and exuberant. Drink it over the next several years.

  • 2013 River West Chardonnay

94 points - Platinum Medal - Best of Class

    Sommelier Challenge - 2015

Our single vineyard River West Chardonnay gains its structure from its bright citrusy acidity, a defining characteristic that we temper with fermentation in French oak barrels, 100% malolactic fermentation, and sur lie aging with plenty of bâtonnage. For the 2013 vintage we found that once again the favored blocks still reigned supreme. These were blended to complement each other in the glass, lending citrus, tropical and floral tones to the nose along with the classic reen apple and pear.

    2013 River West Chardonnay

Wine Enthusiast Magazine - November 2015

The 2013 Chardonnay River West exhibits lemon custard-like notes, crisp acidity, some minerality, and a subtle background hint of oak (it was aged 10 months in 100% French barrels). There is a greenish hue to its gold color, always a positive sign. More Chablis-like than a typical full-throttle Sonoma Chardonnay, this medium-weight effort should drink well for several years.

    2013 Jane's Vineyard Pinot Noir

California State Fair Wine Competition - 2015

The medium ruby-hued 2013 Pinot Noir Jane’s Vineyard is a selection of multiple clones, including all the Dijon clones as well as Wadenswil and Pommard. It is slightly fleshier than its two siblings, medium-bodied, and offers up plum, anise, black cherry and loamy soil notes. Consume it over the next 3-4 years.

From a site on Westside Road, this vineyard-designate boasts a rich experience aromatically and flavor-wise, revealing graham cracker, peach, lime and green apple alongside salty acidity. The oak (34% of it new French) plays a pleasant, supportive role, adding a note of brioche.

    2014 Jane's Vineyard Pinot Noir

Rich Cook, Toast of the Coast Wine Competition - 2016

Talk about a mouth-watering wine! Aromas of lemon zest and dry earth ride above subtle cherry, strawberry and spice. There’s acidity to beat the band, and it contributes a lively citrus note to complement the cherry and strawberry focus. The spice and earth remain present through a long complex finish.

Chardonnay lovers will likely swoon over the price nearly as much as they do the wine. Davis Bynum’s 2013 Chardonnay comes in under $30 a bottle and delivers tremendous bang for the buck with a vintage that is both rich and elegant, showing a beautiful layer of lemon crème with mouth-watering acidity and a touch of woodsmoke.

The 2013 Chardonnay River West Vineyard exhibits loads of minerality, a wet stone-like component, honeyed lemon blossom, white peach and assorted citrus. It is medium-bodied, refreshing and seems to me a quintessential Russian River Chardonnay. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
